Neue Weltordnung bietet viel versprechende Chancen

Dell is waving goodbye to 250 tech support workers at its Nashville, Tennessee operations, the company said today. The layoffs are the fruits of the "Dell 2.0" restructuring strategy, which will eliminate 10 per cent of its worldwide workforce (more than 8,000 jobs) over the next year. Dell announced the workforce decimation blueprint back in May.

Manufacturing firms are finding life more difficult
US manufacturing growth slowed in September as production and new orders slipped, official figures show.
The Institute for Supply Management index of national factory activity fell to 52.0 from 52.9 in August. While a figure above 50 still indicates expansion, the index did offer further proof of a slowdown in the US economy. Signs of a slowdown have raised hopes of a US interest rates cut - weakening the dollar which has fallen to record lows against the euro in recent days. On Monday, the euro settled at $1.423, after rising as high as $1.4283 earlier in the day. Currency woes The dollar has been sliding since the Federal Reserve cut rates from 5.25% to 4.75% in September to help rejuvenate confidence in the world's largest economy. Currency traders are now looking ahead to jobless data out on Friday for a better idea of how the housing slump and credit woes are hurting the economy. Depressed numbers could strengthen the Fed's hand in cutting rates further. However, analysts added that the latest manufacturing figures were unlikely to have a big effect, despite them being softer than expected. "Manufacturing growth... seems to have slowed down in the third quarter, but it's still moderately positive," said 4Cast economist David Sloan.
A new book about: Dissent In Bush's Inner Circle - Really something NEW?
White House Granted Author Unusual AccessWashington Post Staff Writer Monday, September 3, 2007; Page A01
Karl Rove told George W. Bush before the 2000 election that it was a bad idea to name Richard B. Cheney as his running mate, and Rove later raised objections to the nomination of Harriet E. Miers to the Supreme Court, according to a new book on the Bush presidency. In "Dead Certain: The Presidency of George Bush," journalist Robert Draper writes that Rove told Bush he should not tap Cheney for the Republican ticket: "Selecting Daddy's top foreign-policy guru ran counter to message. It was worse than a safe pick -- it was needy." But Bush did not care -- he was comfortable with Cheney and "saw no harm in giving his VP unprecedented run of the place."
When Rove, President Bush's top political adviser, expressed concerns about the Miers selection, he was "shouted down" and subsequently muted his objections, Draper writes, while other advisers did not realize the outcry the nomination would cause within the president's conservative political base. It was John G. Roberts Jr., now the chief justice of the United States, who suggested Miers to Bush as a possible Supreme Court justice, according to the book. Miers, the White House counsel and a Bush loyalist from Texas, did not want the job, but Bush and first lady Laura Bush prevailed on her to accept the nomination, Draper writes.
New Book: Details abaout Cheney Lawyer's Efforts to Expand Executive PowerWashington Post Staff WritersWednesday, September 5, 2007; Page A01
Vice President Cheney's top lawyer pushed relentlessly to expand the powers of the executive branch and repeatedly derailed efforts to obtain congressional approval for aggressive anti-terrorism policies for fear that even a Republican majority might say no, according to a new book written by a former senior Justice Department official. David S. Addington, who is now Cheney's chief of staff, viewed both U.S. lawmakers and overseas allies with "hostility" and repeatedly opposed efforts by other administration lawyers to soften counterterrorism policies or seek outside support, according to Jack L. Goldsmith, who frequently clashed with Addington while serving as head of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel in 2003 and 2004.
Greg Palast: New Orleans -- One Year Later -- Nothing Much Has
A Buzzflash Interview
December 22, 2006 "The White House knew [the levees broke] because the Army Corps of Engineers sent them photographs. Again, I want to emphasize that the White House had the photographs of the levees breaking, and didn't tell state and local officials who had stopped the evacuation because the hurricane missed New Orleans. Everyone thought they dodged a bullet, but the White House didn't tell anybody the levees broke and were drowning the city." -- Greg Palast *****
